In 200-250 words, analyze the basic issues of human biology as they relate to chronic conditions and describe the interaction between disability, disease, and behavior. Examine and discuss the impact of biological health or illness on social, psychological, and physical problems from the micro, mezzo, and macro perspectives. Choose a chronic condition from those provided in your text and consider how you might feel, think, and behave differently if the condition were affecting you versus if the condition were affecting a stranger. How might you think differently about this chronic condition if it were affecting someone close to you, your neighbor, or someone in your community? Please include at least two supporting scholarly resources.

  1. In his book, Rewarding Work: How to Restore Participating and Self-Support to Free Enterprise (Harvard University Press, 197), economist Edmund Phelps offers this plan to help the working poor: apply tax credits for “qualified employers” or hire disadvantaged people for “eligible jobs.” Evaluate this plan in terms of market incentives, one of the ten principles of economics, to work and current welfare programs. Is the Phelps’ plan an improvement over current government policies? Discuss.
  2. The availability of investment capital is critical for a market economy to grow. Explain how this investment capital is transformed into fixed capital goods, new technology, and cost reduction using new methods of production. Also, explain how interest rates impact the availability of investment capital.
  3. Your text, on page 629, lists three arguments for trade restrictions. Since economists do not favor trade restrictions, and this is a course in Managerial Economics, make the case as an economist against trade restrictions for these three items. Are there any arguments for trade restrictions that most economists would support? Discuss.
  4. Who was responsible for the global financial crisis of 2007-2009? Free-Market capitalism, government intervention, or a combination of both? Identify the causes of the crisis, the steps the private and public sector took to resolve it, and what leaders should do to keep it from happening again. Remember, banks are profit making firms who supply capital to suppliers of goods and services.

In Lecture 1, we explored how “liberty” was interpreted by the Founders of the American Constitution. These Founding Fathers were influenced by political philosophers who argued that liberty is always at risk, and because of that risk, liberty must be protected, not just by the leaders of a nation, but also by the citizens.
While our founding fathers realized government was necessary to protect the citizens from criminals and outsiders (Lecture 2, comments about the King of England), they were concerned with amount of power the government should be given. To ensure that the people maintained power, the first Ten (10) Amendments (also called: The Bill of Rights) were added.
For this week’s assignment, write a 500-750 word essay addressing each of the following questions:
  • What is liberty? Provide a definition and at least one example.
  • Why does it matter? Explain what you think the citizens of a nation might gain or lose through their liberty.
  • What is your personal responsibility to protect it? Provide examples of what you can do, what you should do, and what you must do.
  • In modern times, do you think Americans have gained/maintained liberty in the way the Founding Fathers described it in the Constitution? Why or why not?
As in all your weekly written assignments, be sure to tie your writing to the readings for that week. You should strive to demonstrate to your instructor (and to the rest of the university) your full understanding of the course concepts being addressed. Don't just answer the questions; really think them through. How will your ideas fit within Locke's "social contract?"
